How to Connect Notion to Your AI Assistant (Step-by-Step)

Notion is where your knowledge lives - meeting notes, project databases, wikis, personal docs, and everything in between. But searching through hundreds of pages manually is slow, and context-switching between Notion and your messaging apps breaks your flow.

By connecting Notion to your OpenClaw AI assistant, you can search, create, and update Notion pages through natural conversation - from WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, or any channel your assistant is connected to. No more opening tabs, navigating sidebar trees, or remembering which database holds what.

Why Connect Notion to an AI Assistant?

Here is what becomes possible once Notion is linked to your assistant:

  • Search your entire workspace by asking. Instead of clicking through pages, just say "Find my notes from the product sync last Tuesday" and get the answer instantly.
  • Create pages from any chat. Tell your assistant "Add a new task to my Projects database called Website Redesign with a due date of April 15th" and it handles the rest.
  • Update databases conversationally. Change a status, add a tag, or update a property without opening Notion at all.
  • Access Notion from WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord. Your assistant bridges the gap between where you chat and where your knowledge lives. You can query your Notion workspace from your phone without switching apps.
  • What You Need

Before we start, make sure you have these three things ready:

  • An OpenClaw account on any plan - sign up here if you have not already
  • A Notion workspace with the pages or databases you want your assistant to access
  • A Notion internal integration token - we will create this together in the next step
  • The whole setup takes about 5 minutes. No coding required.

Step 1: Create a Notion Integration

Notion uses "internal integrations" to let external tools access your workspace. Think of it as a secure bridge between Notion and your AI assistant.

  • Go to notion.so/my-integrations and log in to your Notion account.
  • Click "New integration" in the top-right corner.
  • Give it a name you will recognize later, like "OpenClaw Assistant" or "My AI".
  • Select the workspace you want the integration to access.
  • Under Capabilities, make sure "Read content", "Update content", and "Insert content" are all checked. This lets your assistant search, edit, and create pages.
  • Click Submit to create the integration.
  • You will see an Internal Integration Secret that starts with ntn_. Copy this token and keep it somewhere safe - you will need it in Step 3.
  • That is all you need on the Notion side. The token acts as your assistant's key to your workspace.

Step 2: Share Pages with Your Integration

Here is something that trips people up: Notion integrations do not automatically have access to all your pages. You need to explicitly share each page or database you want your assistant to reach.

  • Open a page or database in Notion that you want your assistant to access.
  • Click the "..." menu in the top-right corner of the page.
  • Select "Connections" (or "Add connections" depending on your Notion version).
  • Search for the integration name you created in Step 1 (e.g., "OpenClaw Assistant").
  • Click it to grant access.
  • Pro tip: If you share a parent page, all child pages underneath it also become accessible. So sharing your top-level "Work" or "Projects" page gives your assistant access to everything nested inside it. This is the fastest way to give broad access without sharing dozens of individual pages.

Repeat this for any other top-level pages or databases you want your assistant to work with.

Step 3: Add the Token to OpenClaw

Now let's connect everything on the OpenClaw side.

  • Log in to your MyOpenClaw dashboard.
  • Navigate to Integrations from the sidebar.
  • Find the Notion card in the integrations grid.
  • Click it to expand the configuration panel.
  • Paste your Notion integration token (the ntn_ string from Step 1) into the token field.
  • Click Save & Apply.
  • Your assistant will restart briefly to pick up the new integration. Within about a minute, Notion will be fully connected and ready to use.

    Step 4: Start Using It

Once the integration is active, you can start talking to your assistant about your Notion content right away. Here are some real examples to try:

    Searching for content:
  • "Search my Notion for the Q2 roadmap"
  • "What did we discuss in last Friday's standup notes?"
  • "Find all pages tagged with 'urgent' in my Tasks database"
  • Creating new content:
  • "Create a new page in my Projects database called 'Website Redesign'"
  • "Add a meeting note for today's sync with the marketing team"
  • "Make a new entry in my Reading List database for the book Thinking, Fast and Slow"
  • Updating existing content:
  • "Change the status of 'Website Redesign' to In Progress"
  • "Add the tag 'high-priority' to my Q2 roadmap page"
  • "What are the action items from last week's meeting notes?"
  • The assistant uses natural language understanding, so you do not need to memorize exact page titles or database names. It will search and match based on what you describe.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Notion + AI

Once you have the basics working, here are some ways to get even more value from the integration:

  • Share your most-used databases first. Start with the databases you check daily - tasks, projects, CRM, content calendar. You can always add more pages later.
  • Use descriptive page titles. The assistant searches by title and content, so "Q2 2026 Product Roadmap" is much easier to find than "Roadmap v3 (copy)". This small habit makes a big difference.
  • Combine with other integrations for full workflow automation. Connect Notion alongside Todoist, Linear, or GitHub and your assistant can move tasks between systems. For example: "Take the action items from today's Notion meeting notes and create Linear tickets for each one."
  • Use it from your phone. If your assistant is connected to Telegram or WhatsApp, you can query your Notion workspace while you are away from your desk. Ask "What's on my agenda for tomorrow?" from a taxi and get a structured answer pulled straight from your databases.
  • Let the assistant summarize for you. Instead of reading through a long page, ask "Summarize the key decisions from the board meeting notes" and get a concise digest.
  • Troubleshooting Common Issues

If something is not working as expected:

  • "I cannot find that page" - Make sure you shared the page (or its parent) with your integration in Step 2. This is the most common issue.
  • Token errors - Double-check that you copied the full ntn_ token with no extra spaces. You can regenerate it at notion.so/my-integrations if needed.
  • Slow responses - Large Notion workspaces with thousands of pages may take a few extra seconds to search. This is normal.
  • Conclusion

Connecting Notion to your AI assistant takes about 5 minutes and removes a surprising amount of daily friction. Instead of tab-switching and manual searching, you get instant conversational access to your entire knowledge base from wherever you already communicate.
